What We Do?

We provide or source lidar surveys based on an independent appraisal of your requirements. We also provide independent quality control, confirming the accuracy of LiDAR data you may purchase from other providers. We also process LiDAR data and produce a variety of digital products, including: Digital Elevation Models, contour models, topographic feature extraction & more.

service 1

We use the latest tech

From terrestrial and airborne laser scanners to UAV drones, we use the latest and most efficient technology.

service 2

We work in all environments

From the deserts of Algeria and Oman to snow covered Greenland, we can survey in all conditions.

service 3

We deliver high quality

DTM models, contours & difference maps, Merrett Survey have provided quality products to clients for over 25 years.

Application Areas

There are many application areas for airborne LiDAR, pipeline, transmission line or highway & railway corridor surveys. We regularly survey urban environments, for example lidar data is often used for Telecommunications planning work. Airborne LiDAR is also used for flood plain surveys - coastal or river & Digital Elevation Models created from LiDAR can be used to model flooding events. LiDAR's ability to penetrate tree canopies & vegetation even in densely foliated areas makes it ideal for archaeology & forestry applications.

For coastal zone surveys - accessing inter-tidal zone, or difficult access areas is easily achieved with airborne surveying. LiDAR can provide data for erosion, sediment transport & sea defence studies. We supply airborne LiDAR services to the Oil & Gas industry, LiDAR is useful for infrastructure development planning & designing (roads, pipelines, plant, well site) & for seismic exploration (slope maps).

Corridor Projects

We provide LiDAR surveys and analysis services for the mapping of powerlines, railway corridors and pipeline routes. Airborne LiDAR surveys offer many advantages, the data is collected rapidly and can be used for many applications including: vegetation management, route planning, thermal uprating and identifying infringements. Merrett Surveys also own a ground based laser scanner which can be deployed to scan features such as power line transmission towers in higher resolution for the creation of accurate 3D models.

Identifying and resolving clearance issues enables efficient asset utilization and enhanced safety. We also record weather data so that temperature, wind speed etc... can be taken into account in PLS-CADD when modelling the towers and cables.

Forestry

LiDAR mapping facilitates 3-D analysis of forest structural elements such as crown density, crown volume, stand height, and tree density over large areas. From the LiDAR data, more complex forest characteristics can be studied, such as basal area, forest biomass, forest volume, and leaf area index.

If you can see the sky from the forest floor, then some of the lidar energy will reach the ground and record the ground shape, allowing us to map the terrain 'beneath' the tree canopy. Hover over the image above to see the Digital Surface Model where trees have been removed to reveal topographic details below the tree canopy. Comparing tree canopy and ground surface also enables the study of changes in 'bio-mass'.

The image shows how some of the laser energy has reached the ground, this enabled us to model the ground surface under the tree canopy and we could identify drainage features and other important topographical features.

The LiDAR data is also useful for development and planning within foliated areas. Because the LiDAR penetrates the foliage canopy, it is also useful for areas of archeological interest and can reveal surface details that would be hidden if using conventional aerial photography.

Merrett Survey Limited - Airborne LiDAR

Coastal Projects

LiDAR surveys are ideal for studying erosion / movement monitoring of coastal slopes. The combination of airborne LiDAR data and GIS technology facilitates the rapid production of geomorphological maps. LiDAR is ideal for studying fluvial features on floodplains. Digital Elevation Models (DEM's) can produced, which accurately represent landform surface variability and offer an important opportunity to measure and monitor morphological change and sediment transfer across a variety of spatial scales.

We can process the LiDAR for analysis to best suit your requirements. For example, we can produce contour models, cross sections, maps coloured by elevation, reflectance, aspect etc...We can output the data in many formats for use in a variety of programs including AutoCAD or for use in a GIS.

We can also analyse the data, for example by producing maps showing water flow directions and flood maps or by calculating volumes. For a project in Lyme Regis, we combined Terrestrial Laser scans of the beach with airborne LiDAR data. Using the airborne LiDAR, we were able to penetrate the foliage on the cliff in order to model the cliff face.

Products delivered included: Contour maps Volumetric analysis Sections Topographic survey drawing

Oil and Gas

LiDAR can aid in the evaluation of prospective sites, a LiDAR survey can include aerial photography and provide digital elevation models, contours, slope and aspect maps that can be incorporated into a GIS package,

LiDAR has the advantage of 'seeing through the foliage' to map the ground even in rainforest. A LiDAR survey can aid in pre-planning, identify staging areas, position construction crews to work in downhill directions, logistic planning and safety planning.

For a large project in Algeria we assisted the client with a LiDAR survey for a seismic project where we delivered seismic line profiles that were used to determine elevation changes and slope.

Quality Control & Ground Support

If you provide laser scanning services, we can provide independent confirmation of your accuracies and offer ground GPS control services - worldwide. LiDAR processing services include coordinate transformation services for both plan and height data. Also, we can process the LiDAR data to produce a variety of digital products, including: Digital Elevation Models, contour models, vector maps for showing water drainage & more.

Consultancy Services

We can aid in drafting survey specifications for topographic surveys. Merrett Survey have presented papers at the ILMF (International Lidar Mapping Forum) in USA, and also at pipeline conferences in Europe, plus at StocExpo in Rotterdam.

We can provide training in Geodesy and surveying for mapping. As today's industries become more reliant upon geographic data, it is vital to 'keep up' with the geodesy involved. Merrett Survey can provide independent confirmation of your accuracies and offer ground GPS control services - worldwide.

Datum Transformations are always a potential source of error in processing airborne LiDAR, we are very experienced in accurately converting datasets from one co-ordinate and height system to another. This includes developing high accuracy local geoid models and dealing with numerous grids and datums worldwide.

Aerial Imagery

We can provide very high quality aerial imagery, down to 5cm per pixel resolution. Often, we combine high resolution aerial images with LiDAR data to create a rich 3D data set by 'draping' the imagery over the high resolution Digital Terrain Model.

The image (left) shows high resolution aerial imagery that was combined with LiDAR data for monitoring mud flats where a new container port was under construction.

Mining

Surveying 240 miles north of the Arctic Circle in Greenland presents many challenges, but Lidar provided a rapid and detailed survey to enable the design of a new open pit mine, plus access road to/from the camp/dock location, 600 below. We also own and operate a terrestrial laser scanner that can be deployed to scan the interior of mines and can deploy a remotely operated vehicle where access to the mine is difficult.

If you are looking to source a LIDAR survey, please contact us with details regarding the service you require. We can provide or source LiDAR surveys for you based an independent appraisal of your requirements.

If you are a LiDAR service provider, we can provide independent confirmation of LiDAR accuracy and offer GPS and ground control services - worldwide. We also offer a full range of LiDAR processing services, such as proivding coordinate transformation services and processing the LiDAR into digital products such as DEM, DTM and contour maps.
